SHOF MISSION STATEMENT

Founded in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the accomplishments and lives of those men and women who create the popular songs that serve as the soundtrack of our lives.

The ultimate goal of SHOF is to establish a physical home for its vast collection of memorabilia and research material, making available to the public a comprehensive collection and archives exploring the history of popular music and encourage the next generation of songwriters.

To achieve its goals, the Songwriters Hall of Fame relies on the generosity of its friends and supporters to meet the costs of providing programs, archives, educational research, promotional activities, showcases, workshops, scholarships and publications throughout the year. Contributions help SHOF to expand its collection of research and educational materials, promote new songwriters through its “New Writers” promotional CD series, and host the annual Award and Induction Ceremony.

While fundraising for a physical museum continues, the Songwriters Hall of Fame has researched and collected biographies, photographs, discographies, memorabilia, recommended materials and other reference tools available in its virtual museum and online library.

Through the leadership of its Board of Directors and staff, SHOF manifests the commitment to a physical museum by fundraising efforts to establish a permanent collection of memorabilia and research in a state-of-the-art museum and music archive that will serve as an international cultural center with individualized exhibits, educational programs, scholarships and publications for aspiring songwriters, students and fans.

Support services are growing every day and as SHOF Chairman Hal David has said: “The underlying goal of the Songwriters Hall of Fame is to make as many people as possible aware of the value of the songwriter, the great part that songs play in our everyday lives, and the incredible contributions of songwriters. The idea of a national museum for popular music has been discussed and explored for years and I will do everything in my power to make it a reality.
