Dinah Shore was born Frances Rose Shore on March 1, 1917 in Winchester, Tennessee.
In her early career she was a featured vocalist with the Xavier Cugat band. She turned solo in 1940, the first vocalist to break away from the big band format and become ‘solo-billed.’ From 1940-1954 had 75 top twenty recordings including the #1 hits “I’ll Walk Alone” (1944), “The Gypsy” (1946), “Anniversary Song” (1947) and “Buttons and Bow” (1948).
During the 1950’s, Shore also starred in several films including 1944’s Up in Arms and 1946’s Till the Clouds Roll By.
From 1951-1962, Shore became an American fixture with her televised variety show, The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, which was following in the 1970’s by the popular talk show.
Dinah Shore died in 1994.
