Named for a Toronto nightclub that never opened, Glen Gray formed the Casa Loma Orchestra in 1927 as an offshoot of the Jean Goldkette band in Detroit.
With trombonist Pee Wee Hunt, Gene Gifford arrangements, Gray on alto sax and featured vocalists Kenny Sargent, Mildred Bailey, Clyde Burke, Frankie Carle and Fats Daniels, the orchestra recorded over 60 hits for Decca Records including the #1 recordings of ‘Blue Moon’ (1935), ‘When I Grow Too Old to Dream’ (1935), ‘Heaven Can Wait’ (1939), ‘Sunrise Serenade’ (1939) and ‘My Heart Tells Me’ (1943).
Glen Gray died on August 23, 1963 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
