George stars in a Hollywood musical The Phantom President, with a score by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and co-starring Claudette Colbert and Jimmy Durante

After returning to Broadway, George stars in Eugene O'Neill's comedy Ah Wilderness receiving rave reviews for his performance


1937

George stars as President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the musical I'd Rather Be Right. The show was a massive success and Cohan began a national tour with the company. The role would later be played by Kevin Kline in the 1993 film Dave.

George Cohan announces retirement

Visits the White House, where President Roosevelt awarded him the Congressional medal of honor as the creator of "Over There." No other composer or lyricist has been awarded such an honor.

Film biography entitled Yankee Doodle Dandy opens nationwide starring James Cagney as George M. Cohan

November 5 - George M. Cohan, the original song and dance man, dies in New York City.

"Mary's a Grand Old Name" reaches the top twenty on the Billboard charts with a recording by Bing Crosby

Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians reach the top twenty five on the Billboard charts with a recording of "The Yankee Doodle Boy"

September 11 - Oscar Hammerstein II unveils an 9-foot high, bronze status of Cohan in the heart of Time Square on Broadway
